Chef's Message
Chef Jimmy Vena has been working in commercial kitchens since the age of 12 (making Pork Roll and Cheese sandwiches at Johnny Bacc's in Rutherford, 1974). After graduating from Johnson and Wales University with a degree in Culinary Arts he was the youngest person ever to hold a Commis de Tournant's position at the fabled Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. He cooked there for countless celebrities and politicians (including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Mary Tyler Moore, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissenginer, and Kin Fisel) from the service room kitchen. Over the years Chef Jimmy has ran many successful restaurants and catering houses including the Landmark II in E. Rutherford, Steves Sizzling Steaks in Carlstadt, Anthony's Brielle House on RT 71, his own M&J Cafe in Lakewood, and the award winning Bacon on Wheels Food Truck. The Coal House Bistro is the Restaurant that he has been dreaming about for years - an intimate and comfortable dining room where he can interact with his guests from an open kitchen. His menu reflects updated version of comfort food classics and many original recipes of his own.
